Occoquan Challenge 2011
It was Indian summer at the Occoquan Reservoir last Sunday, and the B-CC crew fans were basking in the sunshine and in glorious racing. The men's first eight won a first place trophy and the women's first eight won 2nd place! The men had won this race in 2009 and came in a close second in 2010. The women have never had this strong a showing in this regatta, the next highest place finish being last year's fourth. The "Challenge" is a unique 5K course in that boats start and finish at the same location and complete a wide quarter mile 180-degree turn at the midway point.
Coming in a whopping 25 seconds ahead of the next fastest boat was B-CC"s winning junior men's eight: Caelan Collins (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Matt Dutko, Sam Weiner, Shray Mittal, Nate Hodge, Adam Schlesinger, and Sam Murphy.
In the women's first eight, coming in only 5.65 seconds behind the first place boat were: Zena Wolf (cox), Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Erin Walk, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Margaux Carle.
In second men's eight were: Nico Judge (cox), Joel Rosenblum, Joaquin Rodriguez, Rohan Mittal, Trevor Wind, Ian Weaver, Matt Baer, Jeremy Lartigue, and Peter Murphy. This boat finished 6th out of 14 boats. In the third eight, coming in 11th place were: Julia Maslin (cox), Mitchell Broadwater, Mishel Kisi, Aidan LaPierre, David Lougani, Diego Wahl, Nolan Petty, Srikanta Mehta, and Theo Montgomery.
In the women's second eight were: Maddy Turner (cox), Sabina Gudmundsson, Molly Gibson, Katherine Smith, Julia Vasquez, Vanny Stepney, Tamsin Bradbury, Sophie Rosenthal, and Taylor Joseph. This boat finished 8th out of 11. In the third eight, in 11th place, were: Phoebe Mejia (cox), Rachel Dick, Lexi Theiss, Emma Dauster, Natalie Rogers, Vivian Vasquez, Caitlin Beakes, Sara Katsnelson, and Jacqueline Whitford.
The women's team also had a powerful four that came in 6th out of 10 boats. In this boat were: Julia Masin (cox), Gyl Weisenfeld, Ruby Smith, India Scribner, and Julia Vasquez.
Our mighty rowing Barons will be heading to this Occoquan venue again this coming Sunday, October 176h for the Occoquan Chase. Come out and enjoy this scenic and exciting racecourse while cheering on our team!
