Crown of Wisconsin Avenue Regatta
Saturday, April 23,2011

Last Saturday's Crown of Wisconsin Avenue Regatta capped off a spring training week marked by crazy weather, culminating in the flooding of Washington Harbor. B-CC's athletes and coaches worked hard throughout the week, undaunted by Mother Nature, earning and deserving the beautiful and successful race day Saturday proved to be. B-CC raced against local crews from GDS, NCS, St. Albans, O'Connell, Sidwell, Washington-Lee, West Potomac, Whitman, & Wilson, winning several first, second & third place finishes in both heats and finals. This was a 2000-meter college-level racecourse, 500 meters longer than the usual high school course.

Regatta highlights included three first place wins:
The Girls Varsity Four had a beautiful race, coming in ahead of Washington-Lee, NCS, and GDS. In this boat were: Zena Wolf (cox) Katie Sampson, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend & Amanda Litty.
Boys 3rd Varsity Four rowed a spectacular race, beating St. Albans, Wilson and W. Potomac. In this boat were: Will Smith (cox) Alex Loomis, Fred Johnson, Matt Whitstock, & Joaquin Rodriguez.
In the Boys Novice Four were Nico Judge (cox), Diego Wahl, David Loungani, Jeremy Lartigue, & Theo Montgomery. This was the first time these novice boys had ever rowed together in a four, making it a particularly remarkable win!

The Barons very strong Boys Varsity Eight came in second, behind St. Albans, but ahead of Whitman and O'Connell in an exciting and very fast finals race. In this first boat was: Matt Speck (cox), Erik Holmvik, Michael Colella, Harry Holroyd, Sam Weiner, Nick van der Vink, Matt Dutko, Adam Schlesinger, & Greg Mariuzza.

The Girls Varsity Eight had a busy day of racing, with several girls rowing in multiple races. This boat (Zena Wolf, cox, Katie Sampson, stroke, Lizzie Hook, Sofia Arend, Amanda Litty, Abby McIntosh, Charlotte Myers, Naomi Balodemas, and Erin Walk) came in second in their heat, ahead of W. Potomac and O'Connell, but behind Whitman. In the last finals race of the day, this strong but exhausted boat fell to Whitman, NCS & Wilson.

The Girls 2nd Varsity Eight won their heat and then came in second, ahead of Wilson and W. Potomac, in a terrific finals race. The Barons were in the lead until the last 500 meters when Whitman pulled ahead in a final sprint to the finish. In this boat were: Maddy Turner (cox), Margaux Carle (stroke), Tamsin Bradbury, Julia Vazquez, Sabina Gudmundsson, Rea Marmarinou, Gyl Weisenfeld, Kate Waldmann and Rachel Brocker (raced in heat)/Erin Walk (raced in final).

The Boys 2nd Varsity eight also won their heat and then came in 3rd in their final race, behind St. Albans & Whitman, but beating O'Connell by several boat lengths. In this boat were: Caelan Collins (cox), Rohan Mittal (stroke), Sam Murphy, Shray Mittal, Trevor Wind, Ian Weaver, Joaquin Rodriguez, Joel Rosenblum, & Alex Lallas.

The Girls 3rd Varsity Eight brought three freshmen into its ranks in a very competitive heat, falling to Whitman, NCS, & Washington-Lee. In this boat were: Kate Lester (cox), Taylor Joseph (stroke), Emma Dauster, Gena Bunker, Alexa Green (9th), McKenzie Zellner (9th), Vivian Vazquez (9th), Jacqueline Whitford, & Katherine Smith.

The Boys Freshmen Eight faced a very competitive heat, falling to Washington-Lee, St. Albans, & Whitman in a tight race. Racing in this boat were: Nico Judge (cox), Mitchell Broadwater (stroke), Nolan Petty, Matt Baer, Mishel Kisi, Aidan LaPierre, Peter Murphy, Srikanta Mehta, & Oliver Jenkins.

According to several accounts from the boat, the Girls Freshmen Eight were winning their race until officials ordered the Barons (but not the other boats) to come to a complete stop due to another boat's lane violation and a potential collision. They lost their first place position, but not their determination, catching up to the other boats to finish just 2 seconds behind the pack, which included Whitman, W. Potomac, & Wilson. In this boat were: Julia Maslin, Lexi Theiss (stroke), Alexa Green, Caitlin Beakes, Vivian Vasquez, Molly Gibson, McKenzie Zellner, Natalie Rogers, and Rachel Dick.

This Sunday the team travels to Chestertown for the Maryland State High School Championships.
Go Barons!
